Lisbon Rooftop Sketch

Using lines and washes to simplify complex urban landscapes
1

“A fine suggestion, a sketch with great feeling, can be as expressive as the most finished product.” - Eugène Delacroix

In this video I approach an overhead view of Lisbon with buildings receding into the background into the sea. With a subject that can be so complex and full of details I suggest using a “sketching shorthand” type of approach to render this urban landscape as it recedes in space. I touch on how to simplify the perspective and the multitude of textures from the distant trees and buildings in the background, to all the various architectural elements in the foreground.
