Drawing Couples

Simplified drawings of figures in an embrace

Recently in my figure drawing class at les z’Arts des paillons, we were fortunate to have two models posing together. In one pose in particular they were quite close, practically in an embrace.

Initially I thought this pose could cause some issues due to the figures overlapping and the complicated position. What I realized however was that because of the close proximity of the two figures together, it actually helped with certain issues such as proportion and massing in complex shapes. The resulting drawings were beautiful, with an expressive and narrative quality that are often less apparent in solitary figure drawings.

In this video I focused in on embracing couples and how I go about drawing them. I look at ways to simplify and mass in the shapes of the figures, envelope them together and how to place them in the proper proportion with one another.
