With a painting oeuvre filled with some of the most iconic pieces ever created, the drawings and sketches of Vincent van Gogh are often overlooked. Still, Vincent’s artistic genius is as present in his drawing works as they are in his finished paintings. Thankfully with over 1,100 drawings and more than 800 letters from Vincent’s hand left to us ( largely compiled by his sister in law, Johanna van Gogh-Bonger) we can get an insight into not just the artist’s technique but the vision and reflections behind his works. Whether they be quick sketches included in letters to his younger brother Theo or to others, or developed works made after his own completed paintings, the sketches of Vincent van Gogh are an inspiring resource in how someone communicates across time through their images and words.
